The colors you wear express your personality and style, so make sure they’re broadcasting the right message. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, breaks down the fall palette.

Slate blue
You’re loyal and dependable, like the classic denim in your closet, Eiseman says. But this midtone blue is a bit dressier and just a step above.

Tan
You express stability. “Khaki denim goes with everything,” Eiseman says. You can wear it constantly and for a long time—the more broken in, the better.

Olive
You fall in line with the military trend, but you lean toward nature as well. “Lichen is more organic,” she says. “It’s an earth tone.”

Burgundy
You’re sincere. “Its red undertone signals a bit more excitement than a rust, but it’s not as dramatic as a samba,” Eiseman says.

Do: Wear neutral hues
Let your bold denim speak for itself. Neutrals like black, white, beige, and gray can balance the pop of color. Besides, trying to find a complementary color is a fashion risk.

Don’t: Wear loud patterns or colors
Vivid hues and audacious prints—even if that Hawaiian shirt coordinates perfectly with those hunter-green jeans—will not play well with your colorful pants.
